Democrat Davis Outraises Republican Abbott in Governor's Race
Posted January 15th, 2014 @ 7:43am by Jim Forsyth

Democrat Wendy Davis has shown strength in her first big test in her underdog run for governor, outraising Republican front runner Greg Abbott in the last six months, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Davis raised more than $12.2 million dollars according to campaign finance reports released late Tuesday.  Abbott raised $11.5 million.

"Senator Davis' strong report shows once again that momentum continues to build behind her candidacy for Governor and Texas Democrats," state Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said.  "While Greg Abbott has been raising money and waiting in Rick Perry's shadow, Texans are supporting change.  Senator Davis has rocketed pas the credibility threshold for her candidacy, she's a fighter, a leader and the future Governor that Texans deserve."

But Kami King, a political analyst at the University of North Texas, says Republicans will be parsing the figures to see how many of the 84,000 people who reported donating money to Davis are Texas residents who can cast a ballot for her in November, and how many are from out of state, and were moved to donate by Davis' position as a champion of the pro choice campaign.

"You want to watch and see if that money is coming from inside or outside of Texas," King told 1200 WOAI news.  "Because if it looks like it's coming from outside of Texas, there will be trouble."

Republicans are already pounding Davis for raising money in pro choice strongholds like San Francisco and New York City.  The campaign disclosure forms don't say where the donors live.

King says money doesn't guarantee victory, but it helps.

"Absolutely not, but I would say eight times out of ten, that answer will be yes," she said.

She points out that Ann Richards defeated Republican Clayton Williams in the 1990 race for governor, even though Williams outraised Richards two to one.  She points out that other factors, including personality and potential gaffes, will loom large in the campaign.

The Abbott campaign points out that even though it was outraised in the last six months, but Abbott already had a formidable war chest, and has more cash on hand than Davis...more than $27 million.

And Abbott campaign manager Wayne Hamilton is already claiming that Abbott has stronger support in Texas than Davis.

"This is a campaign by Texans, for Texans, and Greg Abbott is humbled and excited by the widespread support from across the state," Hamilton said.  "Our campaign will continue to talk about and promote ideas to make Texas' education system number one in the nation, continue to grow jobs, limit the size and scope of government, and preserve individual freedom."
