San Antonio City Council today gave its blessing to construction of a privately funded monument to all veterans to be built on the city's west side, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Called 'La Ofrenda,' or 'The Offering,' the monument will be designed by San Antonio artist Jesse Trevino, the disabled Vietnam Veteran who designed the prominent multi-story tile mural which decorates the front of Children’s Hospital downtown.

'You served your country proudly, and I thank you for that history and that legacy that you leave," Councilwoman Rebecca Villagran said.

The memorial will be located at Elmendorf Lake Park, which is near Our Lady of the Lake University.

Lourdes Galvan, a former member of City Council who is spearheading the effort, says it will be paid for entirely with privately raised donations, including money raised at a planned 5 k run on the west side in November.

"Our ability to go home tonight and hug a loved one, or to watch our children play at soccer games or observe their first steps, it doesn't come without a price," she said.

Also working on the design for the monument will be San Antonio artist Gabriel Velasquez.
