Losing Internet service due to a natural disaster may be a thing of the past, thanks to the work of a University of North Texas Professor.

Shengli Fu tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI's Michael Board that he has come up with a drone that can provide Wi-Fi service to a wide area that has been impacted by a hurricane or other disaster.

"During the emergency the typical information infrastructure is destroyed," he said.

Fu says his system uses two drones, one to receive a Wi-Fi signal from as far as twenty miles away, and the other hovers about twenty feet over the devastated area.

He says the Wi-Fi can be beamed from the drone across the entire area that has lost power lines and other ground infrastructure.  He says it will provide Wi-Fi service for citizens, as well as for emergency workers on the ground.

"It will also transmit real time video back to the rescue teams, so they know what's going on," he said.

Fu says the drones can spread Wi-Fi over a length of up to three thousand meters, and if the area affected is larger, an additional drone can be dispatched.
