A 47 year old man is in custody following an hours-long standoff on the city's northwest side, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

It started last night, when police were called to the 4200 block of Spiral Creek, which is near Ingram Park Mall, on a report of an assault in progress.

When officers arrived, they were met in the front yard of a house by a 47 year old man who was waving a gun at officers, and by the woman he had allegedly been assaulting.

Police repeatedly told the man to drop the weapon, and when he refused, officer fired several rounds at the suspect.

The woman ran to the police officers, but the man, despite being wounded by police gunfire, retreated into the home.

At that point, SWAT units were called and the situation deteriorated into a standoff.

After several hours of negotiations, the man emerged outside, but when he still refused to comply with officers demands, he was knocked down with a bean bag rounds.

The man was rushed to the hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound inflicted by the officers.

No officers were hurt.  The officers who fired will be placed on desk duty, which is standard protocol, while the police shooting team investigates.
