San Antonio is going to be in the swim in 2015, with all three of the major swimming competitions in the country being held at the Northside ISD natatorium, 1200 WOAI news reports.
The Natatorium, which is located on Northwest Loop 1604 near the Northside football stadium, will host the Phillips 66 National Championships, the Speedo Junior National Championships, and the US Masters Swimming National Championship.
"These are the three biggest swimming events in 2015," said George Block, the head of San Antonio Sports and the former director of swimming programs for Northside. "So for 2015, all of swimming in America will pass through San Antonio."
The National Championships will be a key meet in preparation for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
San Antonian Josh Davis, who won three gold medals in the 1996 Olympics, says he will participate in the Masters Swimming event. Davis is now 41.
The Natatorium was construction with money from the 2008 venue tax extension, and the 2010 Northside bond issue.
Block said swimming is the best sport for a community to embrace.
"It is lifetime health, it is a lifetime participant sport," he said, adding knowing how to swim can even save lives.
The economic impact of the three events is estimated to be about $5 million. The National Championship, which will be the largest of the three, will be held in August of 2015.
