A large crowd gathered on the steps of San Antonio City Hall today, chanting 'let them stay!' and calling on all local elected officials to support the right of the Central American children now flooding into Texas to remain here, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

"60,000 immigrant children who so desperately wish to escape violence, find their families, and live the American dream," is now Bexar County Democratic Party Chairman Manuel Medina described the children.

Many of the demonstrators held placards demanding that the children be allowed to remain in the U.S.  Some including the wording from the base of the Statue of Liberty about 'give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.'

Immigration rights activist Jaime Martinez blasted people who support deporting the children.

"They wrap themselves with the American flag with one hand and with the other they preach racism and hatred," he said.  "That must stop!"

The activists also denounced U.S. Rep Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) for co-sponsoring a measure with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tx) to facilitate the easy deportation of many of the children.

"Congressman, we ask that you stop answering to the Tea Party and start listening to the vast majority of San Antonio citizens," Medina said.
