Las Vegas police released nearly four minutes of body camera footage recorded by two officers as they breached the 32nd-floor suite at the Mandalay Bay where a gunman opened fire on concertgoers below.
The footage came from the body cameras that were worn by officers Joshua Bitsko and David Newton. In the dark and grainy video, officers can be seen breaching the door and clearing the room.
The Las Vegas Police Department was involved in a lengthy court battle with multiple news organizations over the release of the video footage. Last week the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that the videos must be released.
Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said his department attempted to block the release of the videos due to the ongoing investigation and because he was worried that the footage could be traumatizing for the victims and their families. He also said that releasing the videos would cost taxpayers "several hundred thousand dollars in manpower, time and equipment."
Lombardo said his office will be releasing more videos and audio from 911 calls in the coming months. He said the next set of videos should be released in the next two weeks.
